Most women spend weeks researching strollers and car seats, then pick a prenatal off Amazon in seconds. Depending on how many kids you want, you will be opening that bottle every day for anywhere between 2 to 10+ years. That includes trying, pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding. It should not be treated like a quick impulse buy. What I look for is not the prettiest label or the best marketing. I look at ingredient forms and the dosages. Here are 5 I check first. Folate You don’t want folic acid alone. A lot of women don’t convert it well into the form the body actually uses. Look for methylfolate (5-MTHF), or a mix that includes it. B12 Skip cyanocobalamin when you can. The body has to convert it into a useable form. Methylcobalamin (or another active form) is what I look for on the label. Choline Most drugstore prenatals give you none, or a token dusting like 10-50mg. Pregnancy needs closer to 450mg a day (ideally 600mg-900mg) from food plus supplements, so the bottle should carry a meaningful amount. Vitamin A Beta-carotene only is weak. Conversion is unreliable. I want some preformed vitamin A (retinyl) in there, not only plant precursor. DHA A lot of prenatals skip this entirely. If it’s not in the bottle, make sure you are eating plenty of fish weekly or you have a separate omega you take. There’s more but these are a good place to start if you want to know whether your prenatal is worth it or trash. A lot of drugstore prenatals fail these simple tests. This 2 minute check matters more than another stroller review. — Quick Ferta note while I’m here. Quick note before we start. This email talks about cervical mucus. If that grosses you out or makes you feel icky, skip the email. Cervical mucus might sound gross, but biologically speaking it is the most fascinating substance a woman’s body makes. When you are a young teenager, it is common to be grossed out by the discharge coming out into your underwear. But then you learn about the beauty of God’s design and realize that the discharge is something to be amazed by, not something to be...
A lot of low carb and carnivore people say your body can make its own glucose, so why eat carbs. That line sounds smart until you watch what it does to a woman’s hormones. Your body can make glucose. That is not the same as thriving on it. What gluconeogenesis actually is Your body can pull glucose from protein and other tissues when it has to. That process is called gluconeogenesis. It is a backup system, not the default fuel plan for a reproductive woman. When you force your body to run...
Hey,I’ve been quiet on this email. I had my 3rd baby in December so naturally I put a pause on some things, and this newsletter was one. But if you’ve been following me on X (https://x.com/iam_preethi), I’ve been active there and will continue to be. I will try my best to fit this newsletter back into my schedule. I do genuinely enjoy writing and hearing back from you when you resonate with something I wrote. With that said, one thing I keep seeing is overachieving moms trying to over-schedule...
